If you are running into the "Unable to check for updates" error when trying to update to iOS 5.1 try changing you DNS to Google Puplic DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.8.6 or OpenDNS 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220. I used OpenDNS and it solved the problem on an iPad 2 and iPhone 4s. Thanks to

I have struggled with this problem for 24 hours, and ran across your excellent post. I was not able to get this to work by changing the settings on my phone. But when I got back home to my personal network, I changed the DNS settings on my router to the OpenDNS servers, following their instructions for my Linksys router. Still no luck. Finally, I opened the network control panel, clicked the lock to make changes, selected the advanced settings, clicked on the DNS tab, and entered the first OpenDNS server there. And just like magic, everything worked fine for updating after that. I still have no idea what OpenDNS really is, or why I should use it, but it worked and that's all that I really need. Thanks for the help!
ReplyDeleteWorked on my iPad 2. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThis worked for my iPad2 as well as iPhone 4. Thank you for posting this solution.
ReplyDeleteGlad this has been a help to each of you.
ReplyDeleteIt's still not working! :/ it checks for like 1 second and and comes back with the error every time I hit 'try again'. It works on the computer though but in my case, I prefer doing it on iPad itself... Is there any other workaround? Thanks
ReplyDeletesorry to hear you are still having problems. one of the readers mentioned having to change the DNS settings on the modem it self. did you try turning off your wireless then adding the DNS, try both.
DeleteTried both. I'll wait though... It's not that big an update anyway
